Wabi - Sabi
A group of selected artists that embrace the imperfect and impermanent

With a strong belief that everything that is born, grows and withers away to be yet born again – incessant change from one to another proceeds in an evolutionary cycle – I chose not to be limited to a small corner space that defines who I am and what I must make.
The juxtaposition of form, surface and color, the molecular aspects of a living tissue are my source of inspiration. In this scientific imagery, I could visualize a beautiful array of enchanted landscapes.
I seek surfaces that purposely encourage touch and by inviting the hand to explore the forms as well as the eye, I hope to provoke numerous memories and recollections that have potential to change from moment to moment.
To quote Dalai Lama, " Within the seed of the cause of events is the seed for their cessation and disintegration".

Puneeta Mittal: Of the Earth
ceramic sculpture and installations

The work presented in “Of the Earth”, at the Highwire Gallery is of Puneeta Mittal, a ceramics artist born and raised in India. Her work is an adventure into a world of creative energy, introspective meditation and physical stimulation. It is an intriguing experience for those who witness her insight into nature’s cycles and its relationship to life.
Using clay as her three dimensional media and fluid and accidental applications of paint as her two dimensional media, she is involved with complex relationships and inspiration with the natural sciences. The ceramic works and paintings are influenced by her experiences with earth, fire, chemistry, natural accidents and her media. Her abstractions, both in clay and paint, represent an ongoing process, one work leading to the next. Using her knowledge and sense of the complexity of nature’s phenomena, the works parallel and emulate nature.
Like so many artists and creative thinkers throughout history, Puneeta Mittal is fascinated with the nature of the media and its importance in her life and the living universe. One thinks of the scientific and artistic works of Leonardo Da Vinci, the biomorphic abstractions of Archile Gorky and the inspiration of vast space and microscopic cells for the domes and black holes of Andy Goldsworthy. Viewing the Mittal works of art, organic compositions, as if inspired by visions through the lens of an inverted fluorescent microscopic world, are of this earth and life as experienced by Puneeta Mittal.

Puneeta Mittal
Solo Exhibition September 1 - September 30, 2009

The paintings on exhibit in the gallery at the Cold Spring Harbor Library are by Puneeta Mittal, who is a ceramicist, sculptor and painter. Puneeta Mittal obtained an MA in studio art from Adelphi University, Garden City and an MFA from Long Island University at the C.W. Post campus, Brookville. She is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Adelphi University.

The works on exhibit have been inspired from the scientific world viewed through the lens of a high-resolution fluorescent microscope. These paintings in oil on wood panels and paper represent an array of enchanted colors that bring about the quality of depth at a molecular level that creates an inner landscape. While these works are not replicas of the intricate scientific content, they represent artist’s visualization of the miniscule world opened to mankind owing to advances in technology. In this regard, Puneeta is actively involved in the integration of the Arts and Sciences where she organizes and participates in national conferences.

Puneeta has participated in various shows on Long Island and Manhattan where she continues to sell her work with the support from institutional and private art patrons and collectors. She is a board member of the Art League of Long Island and the Long Island Craft Guild. Puneeta and her husband Dr. Vivek Mittal, reside on long Island and in Manhattan where they continue to practice her art and his science. Other works by the artist can be viewed at www.puneetaart.com.
